The history of Athens starts at the beginning of the 4th century B.C. A city built among seven hills which later became the capital of Greece. One of the oldest cities in the world which is continuously populated from the 4th century to nowadays.
The legend says that this beautiful city was claimed by goddess Athena and god Poseidon. There has been a great battle on the sacred rock of the Acropolis and each god offered his best gift for the city. Poseidon struck his trident on the rock and water immediately came out. There Athena planted an olive tree. Kekropas, half man and half snake, was the judge and tasted the water. He found that it was salty. So he nominated Athena as the winner and she became the patron of the city and gave it her name “ATHENS”.
